Don't put an expiration date on your health.

April 21, 2016

Lose 20 pounds in 6 weeks. 21-day plan. One month diet. Etc. Etc.

What do all of these advertisements have in common? An expiration date.

I've seen so many people go through a time-stamped program, see some results, and within a year be right back where they started or worse. Why does this happen? Because they're making a temporary fix, not a lifestyle change.

When looking to change your eating habits, ask yourself, "Is this something I can keep up for the rest of my life?" A plan that only allows you to eat fruit on certain days or bans all fruit completely isn't realistic in the long-term. A plan that is so scripted and is to be followed to the letter isn't realistic in the long-term. Does your plan teach you what to do when you're at a party or traveling or too busy to prepare particular items that day? What happens when the 14, 21, or 30 days are over? Have you truly gained the tools you need to make healthy choices for the rest of your life?

Some people have asked me to design meal plans for them. "Just tell me what I'm supposed to eat so I don't have to think about it." In the beginning, I considered offering that service. Then I realized my clients aren't going to change their lives with a temporary, scripted meal plan. I want my clients to think. I want them to learn and develop the skills to make healthy choices even when they're in a situation that wasn't planned for.
